# Advanced Digital Product Strategies

Digital products on Fourthwall go beyond simple file downloads. Creators sell video-on-demand (VOD) libraries, exclusive livestream access, course materials, and bundled content packages. This article covers VOD and streaming delivery, third-party platform integration, file size workarounds, livestream sales, and digital-physical bundling strategies.

For basic digital product setup (creating, pricing, managing), see the Sell digital products on Fourthwall article. For attaching digital files to physical products, see the Add digital files to physical products article.

## How to sell VOD and streaming content

Video-on-demand content commands higher prices than other digital formats. You can sell recordings of past livestreams, tutorial series, behind-the-scenes footage, or exclusive video content.

To sell VOD content on Fourthwall:

1. Record and export your video content in a common format (MP4, MOV, or similar)
2. If the file is under 2 GB, upload it directly as a digital product through **Products** in the dashboard
3. For files over 2 GB, use the third-party delivery method below

Packaging multiple related videos into a single ZIP file and selling them as a collection (for example, a "Complete Series" bundle) increases perceived value compared to selling individual episodes.

## How to use third-party platforms for content delivery

For large video files, ongoing content libraries, or streaming-style access, use a third-party hosting platform to deliver the content. Common options include Vimeo OTT, Patreon (for gated video), Google Drive, Dropbox, or a self-hosted solution.

1. Upload your content to the hosting platform of your choice
2. Generate a shareable link or access code for the content
3. Create a digital product on Fourthwall and upload a small PDF or text file containing the access link, login instructions, or redemption code
4. Explain in the product description what supporters will receive and how they can access it

This approach lets you sell content of any size and update the hosted library without re-uploading files to Fourthwall. Supporters receive the access instructions automatically via email after checkout.

Fourthwall delivers the uploaded file to supporters via email after purchase. If you use a third-party platform, you are responsible for managing access and availability on that platform.

## How to sell livestream access

Livestream content creates urgency and exclusivity. You can sell access to upcoming livestreams, Q&A sessions, workshops, or live performances.

There are two approaches:

- **Members-only livestream.** Make the livestream available only to members at a specific tier through your membership settings. This works well for recurring live events.
- **One-time paid livestream.** Create a digital product containing access details (a private link, password, or calendar invite). Set a limited inventory to cap attendance.

For both approaches, include the date, time, and timezone in the product description. After the event, consider re-packaging the recording as a separate VOD product for ongoing sales.

Publishing the livestream product a week or two before the event builds anticipation and gives supporters time to purchase.

## File size limits and workarounds

Fourthwall supports digital files up to 2 GB per product. For most digital content (e-books, presets, art files, short videos, audio tracks), this is enough. When content exceeds the limit, use these workarounds:

- **Compress the file.** Use ZIP compression to reduce file size. Tools like HandBrake can reduce video file size without visible quality loss.
- **Split into multiple parts.** Break a large file into smaller segments and sell them as a bundle or collection. Each part stays under the 2 GB limit.
- **Host externally and deliver a link.** Upload the full file to a cloud storage service (Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar) and deliver the access link as your digital product file.
- **Lower the resolution or bitrate.** For video, exporting at 1080p instead of 4K can cut file size by 50-75%.

Test your download experience by purchasing a test order to confirm the file downloads correctly and opens as expected.

## How to bundle digital products with physical merchandise

Combining digital and physical products increases your average order value and gives supporters a reason to choose higher-priced listings.

**Bundle strategies:**

- **Instant gratification bundle.** Attach a digital file to a physical product so supporters get something immediately while waiting for shipping (behind-the-scenes video with a t-shirt, digital art file with a poster, bonus track with a vinyl record).
- **Exclusive access bundle.** Pair physical merch with access to a private community, course, or members-only content library. Deliver the access link as the digital component.
- **Tiered bundles.** Create multiple versions of the same product at different price points. The base product ships alone; the premium version includes a digital bonus.

To set up a bundle, see the Add digital files to physical products article for the step-by-step process.

Key points:

- Update the product name to reflect what is included (for example, "Hoodie + Exclusive Video")
- Add details in the product description about what the digital component is and how supporters receive it
- The digital file is delivered automatically via email after checkout, regardless of the physical product's shipping timeline
- There is no extra fee when a digital file is attached to a physical listing. Digital fees only apply to standalone digital products.

## Can I update a digital file after supporters have already purchased it?

Yes. Edit the product and re-upload the file. Supporters who previously purchased the product automatically get access to the new version.

## What file formats can I upload as digital products?

Fourthwall accepts any file type as a digital product. Common formats include PDF, ZIP, MP4, MP3, PNG, PSD, and AI files. If you have multiple files, package them as a ZIP.

## Can I sell access to a subscription-based content library?

Yes, but Fourthwall does not host subscription content natively. Create a digital product that delivers access credentials to your external platform (Vimeo, Patreon, a private website, or similar). Alternatively, use Fourthwall Memberships to gate content for recurring subscribers.

## Can I limit the number of times a supporter downloads a digital file?

No. Once a supporter purchases a digital product, they can download the file as many times as they need. There is no download limit.

## Do sample credits apply to digital products?

No. Sample credits only apply to physical products that can be produced and shipped. If your shop is digital-only, your sample credits remain unused until you add physical products.
