Knitwear best practices

You can now create custom knitwear products with Fourthwall!  From the infamous ugly sweaters to classic vests and cardigans, there are hundreds of different knitwear options that you can design directly on your dashboard.

Designing Tips

When designing your knitwear product, you should take the following details into consideration:

  • There's a limit of 4 yarn colors per product. We have 36 beautiful yarn colors available(see next section), but only four can be woven into any one product. Fourthwall's design tool will automatically reduce your image uploads into four colors to make your life easy!
    • Use darker base colors. These are more visually appealing since the color accent yarns pop and have a more premium effect.
  • The collar, cuffs, and bottom hem must be the same color. Both for design aesthetics and to ensure there are smooth seams, the neckline, cuffs, and bottom ribbing must be the same color.
    • Make the sleeves unique. If you want a high-fashion knit, you can opt for asymmetric sleeve designs, making this a unique and premium piece of apparel.

Yarn Color Options

In total, you can pick from 36 color swatches for your yarn:

The yarns are 55% cotton and 45% polyester - this material blend ensures that the product feels premium and is durable, keeping its shape after multiple wears.

Buttons Color Options

For knitwear that requires buttons, like cardigans, the button color is automatically assigned based on the color of your cuff/trim color. It will assign beige buttons for light trim colors, and for dark trim colors, it will assign dark gray buttons. In the image below, you can see the buttons and what trim colors are considered light or dark trim colors.

Are knitwear products printed or dyed?

For on-demand knitwear, a technique called jacquard knitting is used to weave beautiful, intricate colorwork patterns into knitted fabrics. Unlike printed or dyed patterns, the design is knitted into the fabric itself. You can learn more about the jacquard knitting technique in our blog post
