Learn how image aspect ratios and orientation work in the product designer, and how to prepare your artwork correctly.
Aspect ratio vs orientation
- Aspect ratio refers to the proportional relationship between the width and height of your design (e.g., 4:5, 16:9, 1:1).
- Orientation refers to whether a product is displayed vertically (portrait) or horizontally (landscape).
In the product designer, posters, canvases, and framed posters default to portrait view. This doesn’t mean you can’t make landscape versions; the products can be displayed either way.
Design with the right orientation
The designer defaults to vertical. However:
- These products (posters, canvases, framed posters) are orientation-agnostic. They can be hung vertically or horizontally.
- Remember to design with your final orientation in mind. For example, if you want a landscape poster, create the artwork in landscape format before uploading.
Workaround if you don’t see orientation options
Here’s what you can do if you DO NOT see the option:
Complete your product listing in the vertical default view.
Open and save a product from the listing.
- Rotate the images on your computer to your intended orientation (landscape or portrait).
Re-upload the rotated image(s) to your product listing.
This ensures your storefront previews match your intended design.
Note on mounting hardware
Canvas and framed posters ship with mounting hardware uninstalled. Customers can hang them vertically or horizontally, depending on preference.
