What is an HS code?
HS (Harmonized System) codes are standardized numbers used worldwide to classify products crossing international borders. The 6-digit global standard identifies product types, and most countries add 2–6 extra digits to provide more specific classifications. Think of it as your product’s “customs passport.”
Why Fourthwall requires HS codes
Since March 1, 2023, the Import Control System 2 (ICS2) has been in effect for shipments to the EU, Northern Ireland, Norway, and Switzerland. ICS2 is a pre-arrival security and customs screening system.
Key reasons HS codes are mandatory:
- Customs compliance: Shipments without an HS code, or with incorrect codes, may be delayed, refused, or returned.
- Duty calculation: HS codes help determine the correct import tariff for your products.
- Efficient processing: Proper HS codes reduce errors and speed up border clearance.
⚠️ Note: Missing or incorrect HS codes are not just about extra duty—they can stop your shipment entirely.
What else ICS2 requires
For shipments to the EU/associated countries, providing the HS code is part of a larger set of required data:
- Accurate goods description: Clear, specific description of the product.
- EORI number (if EU business recipient): Otherwise, full consignee details.
- Net weight and additional classification codes (if required by product type).
Incorrect or incomplete data may result in refused loading, shipment delays, or return to sender.
When HS codes are required for Fourthwall sellers
- Products fulfilled by Fourthwall partners: We assign the HS codes automatically.
- Self-fulfilled or 3PL shipments: You must provide the HS code and ensure all ENS data (description, weight, EORI if applicable) is correct.
Quick compliance tips:
- Always double-check the HS code and product description before shipping.
- Keep the HS code consistent across all orders for the same product.
- Work with your 3PL or partner to ensure ICS2 data is complete and accurate.
