With new regulations being constantly updated depending on the country of your supporter, we have built a template cookie policy banner for you to use on your Fourthwall site. This feature makes it easy to ensure legal compliance with stringent data protection regulations like GDPR and CA Privacy Laws and empowers supporters with control over their online privacy.
How to enable/disable cookie policy banner
By default, all Fourthwall sites will have the cookie policy banner activated. Although we recommend you keep your cookie policy banner enabled to comply with regulations, you have the option of disabling the cookie policy banner. To disable the banner, within your Fourthwall dashboard, go to Site settings > General and scroll down to the Cookie settings section.
We highly recommend keeping the cookie policy banner active unless you have your own cookie policy solution implemented. When enabled, a cookie banner will appear on your site for visitors where cookie policy regulation applies so they can give permission before their data can be used.
How does the cookie policy work
As mentioned above, the cookie banner will show up for visitors to your website who are located in countries or locations where GDPR or CCPA compliance is required.
For visitors where GDPR compliance applies, the following will occur:
- The cookie banner will show up until the visitor either accepts or rejects cookies
- By default, the cookie setting is set to decline cookies as required by GDPR
- Visitors can manage their consent on the privacy policy page of your site
- No data will be sent to your tracking tools (i.e., Google Analytics) unless the visitor approves cookies
For all other visitors, the following will occur:
- The cookie banner will show up until the visitor either accepts or rejects cookies
- By default, for these visitors, the cookie setting is set to accept cookies
- Visitors can manage their consent on the privacy policy page of your site
- All tracked data will be sent to your tracking tools (i.e., Google Analytics) unless the visitor rejects cookies
All visitors that interact with the cookie policy banner are tagged with our cookie, which is called `cc_cookie`. This cookie contains the date and categories of consent or rejection.
Implications of custom code
Our cookie policy banner feature is fully integrated with all analytics tools used by Fourthwall and those applications that you can add via Apps or Analytics section of the Site designer.
If you use custom code on your Fourthwall site that requires cookies, then the Fourthwall cookie policy banner will not take those into account. To make sure you stay in compliance, you have two options:
- Update your custom code to respect the consent given by the visitor. This consent is stored in the `cc_cookie`
- Remove your custom code and use only Apps and the Analytics section of the Site designer
