Limit the Purchase Quantity Per Cart

Updated May 10, 2026

Cap how many units of a single product a supporter can add to one cart

Sometimes you want to keep early supporters from clearing out a drop, give every fan a fair shot at a limited release, or stop bulk buyers from grabbing every unit of a high-demand item. The Limit quantity that can be purchased at once setting lets you set a per-product cap that applies to each cart at checkout.

What this setting does

The limit applies per cart, meaning it caps the number of units of that product a supporter can include in a single checkout. It is not a lifetime limit per supporter, and it is not the same as inventory.

  • Per cart, not per supporter: A supporter can place a second order later and hit the same limit again.
  • Not inventory: The limit does not reduce stock or affect how many units you have available. For inventory tracking, manage stock directly on each product.
  • Per product: Each product has its own limit. The cap on one product does not affect other products in the same cart.

Set the purchase quantity limit

The setting lives in each product's Advanced Settings.

  1. Go to Products in your dashboard.
  2. Select the product you want to update.
  3. Open Advanced Settings from the three-dot menu on the product detail page, or scroll to the Advanced Settings section.
  4. Find the Limit quantity that can be purchased at once section.
  5. Check the box labeled Set a limit for the maximum quantity of this product that can be purchased at one time.
  6. Enter a whole number in the Limit field. The value must be between 1 and 9999.
  7. Click Save.

The cap applies to all future carts that include this product. Orders already placed are not affected.

Which product types this works for

The setting is available on every product type. There is no restriction based on manufacturing service or plan.

  • On-demand products from the Fourthwall catalog
  • Self-fulfilled products you ship yourself
  • Digital products like downloads, license keys, and access codes

What supporters see at checkout

When a supporter tries to add more than the allowed quantity to their cart, Fourthwall enforces the cap on the product page and at checkout. The supporter cannot complete the purchase with more units than the limit allows.

A supporter who wants more units than the cap allows can place a second order in a separate checkout.

Remove or change the limit

To raise the cap, lower it, or turn it off entirely:

  1. Go to Products in your dashboard.
  2. Select the product.
  3. Open Advanced Settings.
  4. To change the cap, update the Limit value. To turn the limit off, uncheck the Set a limit for the maximum quantity of this product that can be purchased at one time box.
  5. Click Save.

Future carts use the new value right away. Orders already placed stay as they were.

Frequently asked questions

Is the limit per supporter or per cart?

Per cart. The cap applies to a single checkout. A supporter can place another order later and reach the same cap again.

What is the maximum value I can set?

You can enter any whole number from 1 to 9999. Decimals and negative numbers are not accepted.

Does this work for digital products?

Yes. The setting works for digital products, on-demand products, and self-fulfilled products.

Does the limit affect my inventory?

No. The limit only controls how many units fit in one cart. It does not change stock counts or product availability. Manage inventory directly on each product if you need to track stock.

Can I set the same limit across all products at once?

No. The cap is configured on each product individually in Advanced Settings.

What happens to existing orders if I change the limit?

Nothing. The new cap applies to future carts only. Orders already placed are not adjusted.
